What Is It With Halloween Costumes These Days?!

My husband and I went shopping over the weekend, for Halloween costumes. (Yes...we do wait for the last minute!) We are going to a family costume party on Saturday and we were attempting to find something simple and inexpensive. You know...like a vampire or a ghost etc. Well we did not find that...no siree Bob! Instead we found this...

This costume is supposed to be Dorothy from the Wizard of OZ. And it was in the "Tween" section. Meaning it is for girls between the ages of 10 and 12. I don't know about you but there is no way I am letting my 11 year old daughters wear thigh highs in public. Or anywhere else for that matter. We also saw these...

This is the French Maid costume for Tweens. It is not as bad as the previous one, but as an adult, I know all about the French Maid and I say Heck NO! And lastly, we have this...

Again...this is for teens and tweens! What kind of mother would allow her "tween" to even see this costume...let alone wear it?! I could be here all day just posting photo's of "what were they thinking" costumes. But if you really don't believe me...go searching for yourself. And if you decide to take your children with you, stay away from the adult costume sections. They have everything from large foam breasts to men's costumes with fake "boners". A warning would have been nice, but you won't find one anywhere. These stores can be a lot of fun for adults but if you have small children, use your discretion. For me, I am going to Wally world and buying a couple of white sheets!

There is no way in hell, one of my girls would be allowed to wear stuff like that!

I saw those too! Just about died! I think Walmart even had a few for tweens that made me take a second look. I can't believe they're making these for such young girls! If I wouldn't wear these in public, why in the world would I let my daughter?!

you should check costumeideazone.com they have lots of really good ideas that won't break the bank.

It makes me so sad to see this type of thing thrown into the faces of young girls regarding what they "should" look like, dress like, etc.

Not everything needs to be sexy. In a handbasket I tell ya...we (the world) are going down.

Geesh. I remember wanting to be a gypsy when I was that age. And not a trashy one either. I'm 40...something and I wouldn't even wear those costumes. How bizarre!

I hate to break it to you, but Wally World wasn't much better. *sigh* When did designers, etc decide it was ok for our precious baby girls to be dressed up as hookers??

And can I just state for the record that there will NEVER come a day when I will allow those Bratz dolls (or anything else!) in my house! Yikes!!!!

Great blog! You're a very gifted & funny writer....and super fabulous MOM!!!

Hugs,
Jeannie

Isn't it awful what people want us to put our young girls in? I ordered a costume for my 5 year old off the internet. "Skeleton Rocker Girl". The photo on the package makes this little girl look 18! Yikes!

Have a Happy one!

We had this same experience this past weekend. I was shopping with my college age daughters, they left without a costume and opted to come up with one on their own. Their comment was that Halloween has turn into an opportunity for girls to wear trashy undergraments in public.

I came across those costumes too. All I could say was "Wow". I'm with you - sheets it is.

Congrats on your SITS day!

there was just a thing of the news about costumes and how very un-age-appropriate they are (and i sooooo agree about that) i think that it might just be safer to make your children's costumes (esp the girls)
yikes! no wonder it is difficult to instill good morals into children today

I went to K-Mart the other day and stopped by the costume section. You're right about the outfits. I was shocked when I saw what they had for the younger selection. Even as an adult, I wouldn't wear some of that stuff!

In my post yesterday I included my disgust with "town whore" costume that I saw everywhere last year. I don't understand why you would allow your child to dress that way, ESPECIALLY your 11 or 12 year old! Objectify much??

I went to our town's trick or treat day last Sunday and I saw tweens wearing the Dorothy one. What's with the costumes these days? They all look like they were bought from an adult book store. I wouldn't let my daughter wear one, let alone want my boys to see a girl in one.

I'm so glad I have a boy, hopefully by the time he is old enought the whole baggy pants, hanging down to your knees phase will be over. Love your blogg by the way.

Hey there. I just stumbled over here from the Saucy site and I thought I would offer a costume suggestion even though it is probably too late now. My hubby and I went to a party last week as Ketchup and Mustard bottles. It was easy and fun and we were a big hit at the party.

I'm so afraid to let my girls grow up. Not that I can stop that from happening or anything but, you know what I mean. Trashy costumes are everywhere and it's really sad. Well, for now I guess I'll enjoy my little non-trashy Dorothy and witch and start learning to sew for when they get a little older. I never had that problem with my boys costumes.

My nearly 10 year old saw the tween Dorthy costume and asked if she could try it on! I was floored when I saw it was made for her age.

I told my teen that if the dress comes with thigh high socks, shows a woman with her breast spilling out or is super short then don't even ask!!!

So I want to know when it went from Halloween to Slut-o-ween.

Seriously now! *I* wouldn't wear any of those costumes as an adult, much less allow my "tween to.

One of the Halloween books we got from our local library had some fun ideas for easy to make costumes - how about if everyone in your family goes as a school of fish? This was one of my favorites! Just need some poster board to cut out the fish shape from, then let each person decorate how they like. Oh, and figure out something for strap son each side to hold the fish up.
